Energy Storage has long been touted to be the main catalyst that will see the rapid transition of the global energy system toward clean & renewable sources. Technology manufacturers and developers have all been setting up camp readying for the “tipping point” where a significant market will develop around Energy Storage.
Today we are seeing significant investments from all parts of the world, with companies looking to invest in a reliable economy like Australia, underpinned by bipartisanship support of a Renewable Energy Target and attractive ROIs. The Energy Storage sector has gained international exposure largely in thanks to an entrepreneurial and marketing genius – Elon Musk. Elon’s company Tesla have created widespread fanfare for their Powerwall and Powerpack products and most recently a famous bet placed on Twitter regarding the installation of the worlds’ largest utility scale Energy Storage System to be based in Australia.
The Hornsdale Power Reserve was a great indictment about what can be delivered in utility scale Energy Storage. Their innovative solution to take power from the grid at times of oversupply must be applauded and used as a case study for other future energy storage projects. 2018 looks to be the year where the technology price stacks up and the world embraces Energy Storage technology from the residential market to commercial & utility markets.
